ACWA Power, Uzbekistan gov’t to develop 1.5GW wind plant

The project is expected to commence full operations by 2027.

Saudi-based ACWA Power entered power purchase and investment agreements with the Uzbek government for the development of the 1.5 gigawatts Kungrad wind farm in Karakalpakstan.

In a statement, ACWA Power said the project will be composed of three 500-megawatt (MW) wind power farms owned by three subsidiaries: ACWA Power Kungrad Wind 1 LLC FE, ACWA Power Kungrad Wind 2 LLC FE and ACWA Power Kungrad Wind 3 LLC FE.

Each project will include a 100MW battery energy storage system.

The project is seen to reach a $2.4b investment value and is expected to offset 2.4 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually. It is also projected to achieve financial close by 2024 and start full operations in 2027.

The wind project, ACWA’s fifth project in Uzbekistan, is expected to supply the power needs of 1.65 million households when completed.

They also formalised deals for the development of large-scale green hydrogen facilities in Uzbekistan in line with the $10b investment cooperation they signed in August 2022.
