ACWA Power to develop green hydrogen, ammonia projects in Uzbekistan

The projects are a first for Uzbekistan.

Saudi Arabia-based ACWA Power signed an agreement with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy and state-owned chemical firm Uzkimyosanoat to build the Central Asian country’s first green hydrogen and green ammonia projects.

In a statement, ACWA Power said the first green hydrogen project will be an integrated facility connected to an existing ammonia plant in Chirchiq. The project, which is targeted to start operating by December 2024, is expected to generate 3,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

They will also study the feasibility of developing a 500,000-tonne green ammonia facility which is expected to reduce Uzbekistan’s natural gas use by 600 million cubic metres a year. The study will conclude by the end of 2024.

The project is seen to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.5 million tonnes yearly.

ACWA Power has five existing projects in Uzbekistan involving four wind projects and a combined gas cycle turbine facility.
