TEPCO buys 36.38% of 29.7MW hydropower plant in Vietnam

It aims to grow hydropower capacity to 2,000-3,000MW.

TEPCO bought a 36.38% stake in Viet Hydro Pte. Ltd. (Viet Hydro), the majority shareholder of Lao Cai Renewable Energy Joint Stock Company (Lao Cai Renewable Energy), in order to participate in the Coc San Hydropower Plant in Lao Cai Province, Vietnam. The plant has a total output of 29,700kW or 29.7MW.

According to an announcement, Coc San Hydropower Plant has been operating since launching commercial operations in April 2016, supported by a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Northern Power Corporation, a power distributing subsidiary of Vietnam Electricity (EVN).

TEPCO said it expects to leverage its know-how and experience from Japan to strengthen Coc San’s profitability through increased efficiency.

The move is in line with TEPCO’s move to invest in renewable energy both in Japan and overseas amidst intensifying conditions within Japan’s electricity industry. It aims to develop a total capacity of 2-3 million kW or 2,000-3,000 MW of hydropower.
