Rosatom starts the main stage construction of the El-Dabaa NPP Power Unit 4
Each unit of the facility holds a 1,200 MW capacity.
Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation began the construction of El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Power Unit 4, making the project the largest nuclear construction project in Africa.
In its launch ceremony of the “first concrete” pouring into the foundation slab, the Russia-based nuclear energy company has marked a significant milestone towards the development of Egyptian nuclear energy and the strengthening of relations among nations.
Located in the city of El-Dabaa over the Matrouh province, El-Dabaa NPP consists of four power units with 1200 MW capacity each. Every unit also contains generation III+ VVER-1200 reactors (pressurised water reactors).

Rosatom has managed four similar operational power units: two reactors at Novovoronezh NPP and two at Leningrad NPP. Outside Russia, one power unit of Belarus NPP with VVER-1200 reactor was linked to the grid in November 2020.
“The first concreting of the Power unit 4 foundation slab launches the largest bilateral cooperation project since the construction of the Aswan Dam, namely construction of the first Egyptian nuclear power plant. This means that our Egypt site is becoming one of the two largest nuclear construction projects in the world,” Alexey Likhachev, the Director General of Rosatom, said.
