India’s solar capacity reaches nearly 70.1 GW
The country is yet to maximise its solar potential of 748,990 MW.
The solar capacity of India has reached 70,069 megawatts (MW), led by the state of Rajasthan, data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy showed.
Rajasthan has the highest solar capacity at 17,839.98 MW, followed by Gujarat at 10,133.66 MW and Karnataka at 9,050.59 MW.
Despite this, the ministry said the solar energy potential in the country is not fully tapped yet, noting that it has an estimated solar power potential of 748,990 MW.

Some measures India has taken to push for renewable energy include permitting foreign direct investment up to 100% under the automatic route and waiving Inter State Transmission System charges for inter-state sale of solar and wind projects commission by 20 June 2025.
It also set up the Project Development Cell to attract and facilitate investments, and laid new transmission lines and create new substation capacity under the Green Energy Corridor Scheme, amongst others.
For solar power specifically, it implemented the Solar Park Scheme for at least 50 solar parks aiming for 40,000 MW of solar projects. It also set up 12,000 MW of grid-connected solar power projects by government producers with viability gap funding.
The government has also installed grid-connected solar rooftop power plants and implemented the Green Energy Corridor Scheme for Intra-State Transmission System, amongst others.
