Singapore awards PacificLight Power contract for fast start generating units

The two generating units will start operations in Q2 2025.

The Energy Market Authority (EMA) awarded PacificLight Power Pte Ltd (PLP) the right to build, own and operate two fast-start power-generating units with a capacity of 100 megawatts (MW).

In a statement, EMA said fast start power generation capacity will help Singapore mitigate the risks tied to the system imbalances that can emerge during events of technical faults and unplanned outages in generating units.

Such events would occur once new and larger generation units start operations and large-scale low-carbon electricity imports are phased by the end of the decade.

“As we move towards a clean energy future and our energy sources become more varied, it is critical that Singapore has sufficient backup capacity to ensure consumers continue to enjoy supply reliability,” EMA Chief Executive Ngiam Shih Chun said.

“The Fast Start generating units by PLP will bolster the reliability and security of Singapore’s power system with the potential to switch to using hydrogen instead of natural gas in the future,” he added.

The award is in line with the Request for Proposal initiated by the Energy Market Company on behalf of EMA in December last year.
