JERA to decommission Kashima Thermal Station’s 6 units

The decommissioning will start on 31 March 2023.

JERA will be decommissioning the steam generation Units 1 to 6 at the Kashima Thermal Power Station which have all been shut down between 2014 to 2020.

In a statement, JERA said it has submitted the notification of change of Electricity Generation Business to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry for the decommissioning of the plants that use heavy and crude oil which will start on 31 March 2023.

Units 1 to 4 have a generation capacity of 600 megawatts (MW), whilst Units 5 and 6 are at 1,000MW.

Unit 1 has been shut down since September 2014, Unit 2 since October 2014, Units 3 and 4 since April 2014, and Units 5 and 6 since April 2020.

“JERA is currently moving forward with replacement work at thermal power plants in other locations (total 4,940MW). With the understanding and cooperation of local communities and other stakeholders, JERA is making every effort to secure a stable supply of energy, it said.

Units 7-1, 7-2, and 7-3 of the Kashima Thermal Power Station have been operational since 2014 and use combined-cycle city gas to generate electricity.
